School Board & Commissioners Joint Meeting Proposed

By: Pat Hunter

Commissioner David Meers requested a joint meeting between Commission and the Loudon County Board of Education school board and it looks like he's going to get his wish. Will commissioners and school board iron out their differences?

At Thursday's Dec. 10th Loudon County Board of Education meeting, BOE chairman Scott Newman made a motion to hold a joint meeting with commissioners at the Loudon High School auditorium. He suggested holding a tentative workshop meeting to be held the last week of January 2010. Loudon High Principal Cheri Parish will check if the high school auditorium will be available for use and get back with the school director and board. Newman's motion was seconded by Van Shaver, which was unanimously approved by the board.

Shaver suggested holding the joint workshop at the Loudon County Tech Center (LCTC) location but Chairman Newman favored the high school auditorium location. Workshop meetings are usually held at the LCTC, 4380 Harrison Rd., Lenoir City.

Newman thought a large crowd would attend the joint meeting. Some school board members suggested contacting all parents using the parent link (auto dialer) to announce the tentative workshop meeting.  A definite date and time will be announced at a later time after both bodies agree on a mutual date and time.

Last April 2008, Commission and school board held a joint meeting to discuss the school building plan; the meeting was held at the Annex. There were concerns about the long term operating budget projections and additional information was requested by commissioners. Marginal progress has been made on the proposed school building plan since that time. Because of the recession and poor economy, interest rates are at an all time low and professionals are urging county officials to take advantage of low interest rates and construction companies that are hungry for work.
