20 CENT TAX HIKE OR MORE

HOW WILL THIS IMPACT YOUR CHECKBOOK,

BUDGET, & QUALITY OF LIFE?

BY: PAT HUNTER

A Public Hearing is scheduled to be held at 6:00 P.M. June 22, 2011 (Wednesday) at the Courthouse Annex, Loudon. The purpose of the meeting is for the Loudon County Budget Committee to accept public comment from citizens regarding the proposed FY 11-12 budget.

The Budget Committee is recommending a 20 cent property tax hike, which will bring the property tax rates to $1.7869 from the current tax rate of $1.5869 per $100 of assessed property value.

The tax could go much higher if commissioners tack on more spending, the day Commission votes on the budget and sets the tax rate. This Special Called meeting is tentatively scheduled for 6:00 P.M. June 30, 2011 (Thursday) at the Annex.

How will the proposed tax hike impact your budget during this economic recession?

The Budget Committee is comprised of Mayor Estelle Herron, and Commissioners Sharon Yarbrough, Don Miller, Bob Franke, and Austin Shaver. The county mayor serves as the budget chairperson and may vote to make further cuts to the budget.

The county mayor also has veto power on the budget, just as Blount County Mayor Mitchell. Not only did Blount County Mayor Mitchell veto the tax Resolution but he cut his own salary, and department expenses, and he requested across the board cuts from of all departments.

Please contact ALL County Commissioners and Mayor and voice your concerns. Urge them to make cuts and stop the spending.  Most people didn't budget for a county tax increase in their spending plans. Please voice your concerns NOW before it's too late!!

To request a proposed budget, contact the mayor’s office at 458-4664 or Email: brightb@loudoncounty-tn.gov and herrone@loudoncounty-tn.gov

E-mails are good to send, but phone calls are even better--leaving a voice mail is the usual way commissioners hear from you if you call them--they do pay attention to your messages. A brief statement on voice mail is good--"NO new property taxes," and give your name to identify that you are a property owner in their district. EVERY contact they get makes a huge difference in their decision making. Thanks for your help in a matter of great importance to us all.
