Commissioners Vote 8 cent Tax Hike

By: Pat Hunter

August 4, 2008

In a seven to three vote, commissioners voted to approve an 8 cent property tax. Property tax rates in the county will now increase from $1.84 to $1.92. The county rate inside Lenoir City will be $1.77 in addition to city property taxes.

Residents will now face higher property taxes despite the concerns of two commissioners Earlena Maples and Wayne Gardin. The concerns of Maples and Gardin fell upon the deaf ears of the other commissioners dead set on increasing property taxes despite concerns about residents facing economic woes, job losses and the financial strain of paying higher prices for fuel and food.

Voting NO: Lenoir City Commissioners Earlena Maples and Shirley Reno and Highland Park Commissioner Wayne Gardin.

Before the roll call vote was taken Commissioner Earlena Maples and Wayne Gardin shared their concerns as to why they were about to vote no.
